Affectionately
known by many as the Soup Newfie, the healthy and hip alternative to fast
food is actually the Piping Kettle Soup Co. located both in the Covent
Garden Market and at 419 Richmond St. Owned and operated by Jim Phillips
and John Grouchy (he'd be the Newfie). It opened in the market in June
2007 and since then the business has grown in volume and patrons.
Both Phillips and Grouchy have roots in the hospitality business with
Phillip's experience being in the kitchen and Grouchy's in the front of
house, making him the man with the ladle.
Admittedly inspired by the Seinfeld 'Soup Nazi' episode, the
gents hummed and hawed about their venture only until they saw potential
competition and that was the only motivation they needed. They serve up
16 fresh soups, stews, bread, a variety of sandwiches, salads and fresh
vegetables, all of which make the Piping Kettle a lunch time adventure.
Great soups aside, here's the extra cool, fabulous part. The Piping Kettle
will cater and deliver! With just three hours notice, they can bring soup,
stew or chili, kettle, fresh bread, bowls and cutlery to your door and
then return later to pick up the utensils. No fuss and no muss. An impressive
catering and delivery menu is a nice variation to the mid-week pizza dinner
and puts a new twist on the typical office event.
What more can we say, really? Two great owners, great food, a quick lunch
for about $5 and everything freshly made. It's the beginning of a soup-based
empire!
