May 2008 - Susan Jacobs
As energized as many of you may have been by the explosion of colour with this year’s spring fashions, proceeding with caution and using some colour common sense is important.
Colour is fabulous; it makes you feel happy, can add life to a tired face and can confidently accompany an otherwise conservative look. But as the saying goes, “A little dab will do ya!”
Regardless of your age or type of style – whether you wear a shiny patent leather rain coat or a sleek two-tone-coloured ballet flat – colour is an easy way to update your wardrobe this season. Beware that something in a bright, intense colour, worn close to the face, is less flattering as you age, since it tends to showcase skin flaws that makeup strives to conceal. But don’t abandon colour; try softer or deeper shades of your favourite hues. My bet is that you’ll look amazing and, perhaps, even younger!
Dresses are prominent this season, which reminds us that, regardless of the trend, one necessity is the little black dress. With so many versions of this classic, now is the time to buy one. The timeless chemise or shift style offers unlimited possibilities: wear it alone or as a jumper or add a jacket for a suited look. Don’t know where to find “the perfect little black dress”? David Findlay is my constant go-to store for this style as well as the ultimately, sexy, wardrobe staple: the pencil skirt. Findlay’s choice of embossed cotton prints and milky colour options this year give these items an “old world” feel but with the necessary trendy vibe.
You can also count on Ricki’s stores for very affordable office-appropriate attire for a smart casual wardrobe. Suits with cropped pants and jackets are popular with the jacket, in particular, adding a responsible and finished look when you need it. High yoke or empire waist tops are featured in a variety of bold graphic and artsy floral patterns this year and will keep you stylish. These tops are an easy option when you’re looking to pair something with khakis or jeans.
One particular red cutie is from the Ross Mayer store, and is the “it” choice for any occasion this summer, whether it be a pick-me-up or a casual backyard wedding. The exceptional attention to use of fabric and the signature details set Mayer pieces apart from other Canadian designers.
Bows are on everything from clutch bags to the tips of your favourite Cinderella-style slippers, and ruffles are also prevalent. The good news is that these details are used well this season. A caveat: as whimsical and feminine as ruffles can be, be sure to pay attention to volume.
Accessories are a necessary indulgence, of course, for adding punch to your look. You’ll find all kinds at many different price points. Footwear is adventurous this season and comes in primary colour options and every style. Slingback, wedge, peep-toe, pointy and round toe flats are a hit this season, while gladiator styling reflects the boho trend in casual wear; with new ankle strap placements, this style is much more flattering. Town Shoes and Feet First stores offer variety and excellent style advice.
As for jewelry, you’ll see playful pieces in vibrant colours and in a combination of materials such as wood, resin, cotton, leather, stones and metals. Again, some common sense is necessary; don’t overdo it with accessories to bring in colour. Instead, pile on some colourful bracelets when you’re wearing a neutral-coloured outfit. Or, add a splash of colour with shoes and earrings. Big, colour-drenched bags can also add the necessary splash to your outfit as well, and that’s all you need!
So why not break out of your conservative safety zone by trying a dab of colour this season? Just remember to pay attention to how you wear it. If your idea of summer means wearing colourful capris and skirts, opt for some fabulous accessories instead to add colour and achieve that personal style. And when you’re out at stores, shop with intention and the knowledge of what’s best for your own style.
